Mr Positive. (Groveland Cafe, Roughton)

Groveland Cafe,
Roughton,
Opening times Mon-Sat 9-5, Sun10-4
After a couple of weeks off the bike it was good to get out again. Unfortunately I had picked the coldest day the week for the ride so had put on several layers as I set off to Hard to Please House to meet up with yesterday's cycling guest, Andrew (who is notoriously hard to please).

It was the first time I had seen Andrew this year and I was greeted with the news that his New Year's resolution was to be more positive and look for the upside, apparently his notoriously hard to please days were behind him.

I had asked him to prepare a 30 mile loop taking in the the Groveland farm shop and cafe at Roughton which he had willing done. Full off positive vibes we set off and caught up on recent news but only the upbeat stuff. However the further we went the colder it got and we lost connection with our extremities. Andrew tried to stay positive as he complained that he couldn't feel his fingers before remembering to add how nice it was to be out on the bikes again in these lovely crisp conditions.

We arrived at Roughton and easily found the cafe and Farm Shop as there were a number of giant signs directing us there.
Outside Groveland Cafe in the outdoor seating area
Inside it was a bit dark and we were the only customers so it wasn't a surprise to see a rather small cake selection with the only cake on offer being a Victoria sponge. This led to a rather low effective cake selection (ECS) score. Andrew opted for the millionaire shortbread with his capuchino claiming there is nothing he liked more than a chocolate caramel based biscuit with his coffee.
The cake selection which included Andrew's 'favourite' type of biscuit
We chose to sit  in the conservatory indoor seating area as it was near a radiator and Andrew could demonstrate today's Cycling guest cycling top tip.

Cycling guest cycling top tip No 66. To regain feeling in your fingers when on a cold ride try placing your gloves on the cafe radiator to create an electric blanket effect for your hands when you put the gloves back on.
Cycling guest cycling top tip No 66
Now we were warm it was time to try our refreshments. Sadly my hot chocolate tasted like a Cadburys one which never scores well and by now Andrew's new found positivity had started to wear off as he returned to his notoriously hard to please ways when telling me about his coffee before remembering his resolution and added it was well presented. The Victoria sponge was a nice piece of cake and attracted a decent cake taste quality (CTQ) mark.
Todays cakes and drinks
With warm gloves we returned to the bikes to complete the loop which was 31 miles and well with in the 10% route distance tolerance so surprisingly Andrew had delivered on that part of the brief for once. Although Andrew had avoided any full blown rants I could begin to see the cracks in his new positive attitude and am now looking forward to seeing how this progresses. I have therefore started to log his positivity coefficient (pc) for each ride so I can plot a graph. Today his pc was a high 8.84.

Terror in the Sky. (Owl Tearooms, Holt)

The Owl Tearooms,
Holt,
Opening times Tues-Sat 8:30-5:30,
Sun 9:30-2:30
Highly Recommended
It had been nearly a week since I did my latest and last Ironman triathlon so I decided it was about time I stopped resting and got back on the bike. I hadn't seen Andrew (who is notoriously hard to please) since I left him at Ljubljana airport in Slovenia, just before my mid-air 'terrorist' incident. So it seemed like a good opportunity to catch up with him for an Ironman recovery cafe cycle ride.

Whoa there, back the truck up! Never mind this ironman nonsense what's this about a mid-air terrorist incident?

Funnily enough Andrew wanted to know more too so as we left Hard to Please House, for a thirty odd mile trip to Holt and the Owl Tearooms, I started to tell him.

*****Warning if you want to hear about my drama in the sky then read on but if you have come to this post because you wanted to find out more about the Owl tearooms in Holt then I suggest you skip the next few paragraphs*****

Myself and Andrew had been out riding in Slovenia as part of my Ironman (which I did last Sunday in case I've not mentioned it) training and I was coming home while he stayed on to meet up with Annie, his partner, for some walking in the mountains. My flight had been going normally when the captain announced we had been diverted to Cologne airport for 'security reasons'. This announcement was most inconvenient as I was next person to be served by the refreshments trolley. Shockingly they refused to let me buy a sandwich as they hurriedly packed it away. I was now both angry and hungry so hoped security reasons didn't take long to sort out (but they do).

After we had landed some big gun wielding German police removed two passengers before the captain explained that a fellow passenger had overheard something suspicious and so had decided to land just in case although he thought it would soon be sorted out and we would be on our way.

After another 30 minutes the captain came back on to tell us that to his surprise the police had asked us to evacuate the plane and we have to go down the chutes. This was very exciting and nearly made up for the lack of airline sandwich. Eager to try the slide out I muscled my way to the front and was told to jump up on to the slopey bit in order to initiate the sliding down process.

Airline passenger top tip no 1. To avoid friction burns when going down the emergency shute make sure you don't let any bare skin touch the slide.
Our airplane minus the passengers and 'terrorists' on the tarmac at the very far end of Cologne airport
Unfortunately I was not aware of Airline passenger top tip no 1 so grazed my elbow. From this point it was another 12 hours for the police to search, question and most importantly feed us before we were sent off to hotels for the rest of the night. Next day we returned to the airport to fly home on another plane, minus potential 'terrorists'.

Just before the return flight I was contacted by the BBC asking for an interview for the local news which I did on my return to Stanstead airport. I covered a number of topics (including cakes, blogs, and ironman training) but they mostly ended on the cutting room floor. I had 15 seconds on Look East explaining what it was like to go down the slides and now consider myself as the BBC's go to correspondent for emergency chute based incidents (and no I didn't shout weee on the way down).

As it transpired it was all a very expensive false alarm as the guys were released without charge the next day, minus one backpack that had been exploded in a controlled way on the runway.

Airline passenger top tip no 2. If you don't want to have your hand luggage blown up then avoid telling the old lady sitting next to you that you have a bomb in your bag, as she may not realise you were joking.

I finished telling my story but noticed Andrew was nowhere to be seen as he had fallen asleep a couple of miles back, and this was before I had even started on my detailed Ironman update.

We got to Holt and took our bikes round to the courtyard garden seating area of the Owl trearooms. It was very sunny and also busy so we were fortunate that the prime shaded table was free. This forced all the subsequent old people who came in to sit in full sun. Fortunately I remembered that Andrew is quite old too so I didn't feel guilty for long.

I had only been to the Owl tearooms once before and it had scored well but as it was now under new management then cafe cycle rules state that the previous scores and post be archived and we start a fresh.
Outside the Owl tearooms
I went to check the cake selection and it was a good one with cakes, tray bakes and tarts all available (all made on the premises to boot), so a good effective cake selection (ECS) rating.

There were also sausage rolls to test out for sausage roll of the year #SROTY.  I had them later back at Crusader Towers and they scored well, especially as they had gone short crust while most others I have tried were flakey. As a result I thought they deserved a place in my current shortlist to take part in the sausage roll off at the end of the year.

Our drinks, Hot chocolate and Cappuccino, scored better than under the previous owners and the cakes were excellent as well. I think my pistachio and cherry loaf was the best cake I had had this year.
Excellent cake
The Owl tearooms were good before but now they were even better moving right up my league table and I highly recommend a visit.

On the way back Andrew seemed keen to talk about anything he could think of so I didn't get an opportunity to tell him about how my ironman went. What a treat he is in for on our next ride.

Climbing tips (Biddys tearoom, Aylsham)

Biddy’s Kitchen,
Aylsham,
Opening times Mon- Sat 09:00-17:00,
Recommended

(Note most recent visit was August 2021 see Let the adventure begin)
Yesterday was the second of my back to back cafe cycle rides I had planned to slip in before my Ironman triathlon in Austria next weekend (did I mention I was doing an Ironmam triathlon). It was also the first chance I had to discuss my next European cycling adventure with today's cycling guest Big George. This time to check out the cafes in the Italian Dolomite's in late August.

However before that we had today's ride to accomplish which was a forty mile route visiting Biddy's Kitchen in Aylsham. I had planned the most mountainous way I could find to help Big George tune his climbing skills although Ringland Hills is no Monte Grappa, it was a start. On the way we discussed the best ways of improving your cycling up hill ability and came up with two ideas. First do lots of cycling and second loose weight.

We soon arrived in Alysham and found Biddy's Kitchen in one of the corners of the square.
Outside Biddy's Kitchen in Alysham Square
We took our bikes round the back to a rather eclectic outdoor seating area featuring both a sofa and normal tables and chairs.
Eclectic outdoor seating area
Once inside it was clear Biddy's had set out to achieve a vintage tea room theme with period features and Vera Lynn Muzak. We decided to sit at the indoor sofa and period seating area but Big George soon became too self conscious and we moved on to a more traditional table.

The cake selection was excellent with lots of cakes, slices and scones to choose from, including a rather impressive Eton Mess cake. I awarded a high effective cake selection (ECS) score. I went for a slice of white chocolate and cherry cake and then, right out of left field, Big George asked for a lavender scone. As Big George has previously stated he doesn't like scones so this was a bit of a surprise but apparently he likes lavender although had never before eaten any.
Impressive looking Eton Mess cake which was part of impressive cake selection
On the drinks front the focus is on tea so only filter coffee is available meaning Big George had one of those and I had my normal hot chocolate. Big George thought his coffee was really good although I found my hot chocolate a little too milky for top marks.
Coffee and hot chocolate
My cake came accompanied with cream and the Lavender scone had cream and lemon curd. The combination was very good and Big George thought it was excellent (as was my cake) and kept saying how much he had enjoyed it on our return ride. I'm worried he will start randomly adding lavender to all his cooking which I'm sure won't go down well with Mrs Big George after a similar experience with Cinnamon and chilli flakes.
Cherry and white chocolate cake plus the lavender scone
Biddy's Kitchen was a very nice cycle stop with good cakes and drinks (especially if you are a tea drinker) and friendly staff so I recommend a visit. As a bonus Biddy's also had a loyalty card for me to add to my collection and some white chocolate and Apricot flapjack which I took away to try as part of my search for flapjack year 2016.It was mighty fine flapjack and should make it though to my end of year flapjack off

As we set off on the way home I realised our cream based cakes and scones had not helped in the losing weight part of our mountain climbing improvement plan so I suggest that Big George join me on a 100 mile sportive I was doing next month. He looked at me like I had just asked him if he wanted to come on a training camp in Syria which I took to be a no. I'm now not convinced that many mountains will be conquered on our August trip (note sadly I proved to be correct on this  see Monte Grappa cycling Adventure day 1).
