Trying to recover from 'long tail' Corona virus, but its not easy! (Part 1)

My Corona Virus Story Part 1

It is now day 79 since lock down started and also 79 days since I first got suspected Covid-19, of which I'm still not recovered. I thought it was therefore high time I told my Corona virus story in a series of posts over the next couple of weeks. I'm hoping it maybe useful to other people who are unfortunate enough to contract the virus and find themselves in my position. It is also a chance to explain to my regular readers why there has been no cycle or cake action for quite awhile and probably for a time to come.

To start with let me make it clear I have what is being called 'long tail' corona virus and I was never hospitalised. This version is when you get a mild to moderate case but then you can't shake it off for weeks or months, there has been a few articles in the press with estimates from 1 in 20 to 50% people suffering like me after they appeared to have recovered. The Doctors don't seem sure if its the virus hanging around or post viral fatigue. I suspect the former, especially as all of us that got it at Crusader Towers seem to have suffered, to a greater or lesser degree, in the same way.

So, in the words of Julie Andrews, lets start at the very beginning. You may recall that in the build up to lock down the government had been talking down the virus as being like mild flu for most and that if enough of us got it we would build up herd immunity. I believe we were encouraged to go to horse racing festivals and football matches to speed up the process. But after a couple of weeks the scientists, government or both had a change of mind and so we needed to lock down instead.

As we gathered round the telly, so Boris could tell us about this with his address to the nation, I noticed I had the slightest little irritation in my throat and had to have an occasional cough to clear it. My how we laughed as everyone pointed at me and shouted "Corona Virus". If only we had known.

As I had barely left the house for a fortnight (apart from the odd bike ride you can read about on the previous posts) then I felt there was no chance of having the virus. But that night I suddenly woke up feeling hot and generally rubbish, like I was getting a cold or flu. I woke Mrs Crusader and told her I thought I had the virus and she might like to go and isolate in another room. At the time this seemed like an over reaction and she rolled over and went back to sleep. However by morning I felt pretty bad with a high temperature, tight chest and feeling of nausea. I certainly didn't fancy breakfast.

However I am a pretty fit chap (even if I say so myself, which I do, a lot) having run 21 marathons, done 4 iron-man triathlons and was in training for next London Marathon (there I go again), so I was confident I would be over it in a couple of days. I was now one of Boris's Herd. Well done me.

For the next couple of days I stayed in bed but then, as expected, I felt a bit better. The rest of the residents at Crusader Towers all started showing symptoms as well so I was allowed to potter around the house as we all joined the herd and self isolated as instructed. Well done us.

But the next day things took an unexpected turn for the worst and I found myself laid out in bed too tired to move with the feeling that someone was sitting on my chest. Regular readers will know I'm not a stranger to a near death experiences having had sepsis twice before, including a couple of days in ITU on a ventilator (see early 2014 posts or full details can be found in the Cake Crusader book). So I knew what being proper ill felt like and it felt pretty much like this.

In fact I had felt like this just before my last trip into ITU and so I panicked. Normally I'm a stickler for the rules but despite government guidelines, discouraging people going to A and E, I decided that hospital was where I needed to be so I got Mrs Crusader to drive me there and drop me off at the door.

Government advice had certainly worked as on arrival the hospital was empty and before I knew it I had been wheeled to a booth, had had my blood taken and had chest x-rays done. On my last visit to A and E, with a broken collar bone, I had to faint in the waiting area just to make it into the x-ray queue which shows what a difference the virus had made to peoples behaviour.

As I lay in my curtained off area I felt very ill (although still not breathless) and felt it was only a matter of time before I would be on oxygen. Then after about 2 hours I suddenly had another sensation. I opened my eyes like a startled rabbit and realised I was starting to feel better. This was rather embarrassing and I now regretted coming to hospital and putting others at risk. As it turned out it was also the first of many occasions when Covid would make me feel dreadful before, with almost a click of the fingers, I would start to feel fine again.

A few minutes later the  A and E doctor came back and told me my x-rays had shown no sign of infection, my vital signs were normal and the blood test had come back with nothing unusual so they threw me out, told me to take some paracetamol and only to come back if I couldn't breath, which I could so I didn't.

Over the next few days three of the five of us isolating together (although not me) lost their sense of smell and taste so we were now ticking a lot of the symptom boxes and it seemed pretty unlikely that we hadn't got the virus, although no tests were available to confirm.

At first we couldn't work out how we had contracted it but then the pieces feel into place and although we will never be sure we worked out the most likely infection route which I will reveal in a latter post but isn't important now.

A week later I felt much better. I still had a tight chest, sore throat and was a bit light headed but my go to strategy after any illness is to do as much exercise as possible until I'm better. I can't emphasise enough that this is the wrong strategy and you can't exercise your way out of Covid-19.

Celebrating my 'Recovery' with cake, but it was the first of many false dawns

Despite not feeling 100%, and often needing a lie down in the day, then over the next 6 days I did a few short runs (up to 5k) and a couple of short bike rides. Although still not feeling great I felt I was on the mend and would soon be able to get back to my running and cycling training plans.

Then on recovery day 16 I woke up in the night with a weird feeling, like the one I had had two weeks earlier when the virus first arrived. However on this occasion there was no temperature or breathing difficulties. By morning I felt completely rubbish again, mainly nauseous and weak, so spent most of the day on the sofa unable to do anything. As before this feeling passed later in the day although I still felt poorly. It was clearly time for recovery plan B. Which I will tell you about in the next post. It included, 'rest' and Jigsaws but didn't work either..

Difficult decesion (Ploughshare, Beeston)

Ploughshare Community pub and cafe,
Beeston,
Tuesday-Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12-4
Recommended

I know the current Coronavirus situation is no laughing matter and that we have been given guidelines to follow by the government re social distancing etc. After careful consideration I have decided to continue with my cafe cycle riding for the time being. I know we are still being encouraged to exercise in order to stay fit (especially cycling and running) and believe cycling is fairly safe as you are rarely within a couple of meters of any cycling guest when out on the road.

I'm a little more nervous about visiting cafes so my rule of thumb will be to opt for takeaway when possible but in the more deserted locations, when there are only a couple of us, I might still go in (following all handwashing advice first of course).

I have always been keen to support the local cafe community so putting a few quid in their coffers at this time is important to me. I understand that not everyone will agree with me but it was within this context that yesterday, myself and Big George headed off on a 50 mile ride to Beeston, West of Dereham to one of the most remote locations I have been to.

A few months ago I had been invited to visit the community cafe and pub (the Ploughshare) in the village and this was my third attempt to do just that. The first one had ended in failure in early January, as they were still on their Christmas hols, and the second ride had been abandoned due to heavy rain so yesterday was third time lucky.

The way out was into the wind and it may just be coincidence but the roads seemed more desereted  than normal with the majority of vehicles we came across being delivery vans. It was a bit of a slog but we made it to the cafe/pub and went inside (and after a handwash) found the cafe area.
Outside the empty ploughshare pub/cafe
Not surprisingly we were the only customers in either section. In the circumstances I felt it only fair to give a default 7 for ambiance and atmosphere rating.
Big George enjoying his cafe in the cafe area
There was a nice range of cakes in the cake selection although only single slices of each was on display.
Cake selection limited to a slice of each
We ordered our standard hot chocolate and coffee and as I felt that there may not be many other opportunities for a while I also went for egg on toast in my search for egg on toast of the year.

Not surprisingly with no other customers the food and drinks soon arrived. The drinks were a little disappointing as it was Cadburys hot chocolate and fairly standard coffee.
The hot drinks
The egg on toast was a good effort with the eggs nicely poached on some standard sliced brown bread.
Possibly my last EoT for a while
On the cake front I opted to take some brownie back to crusader towers and when I got to try them later they turned out to be some of the best brownie I have had with a great chocolate taste and a great brownie texture. So top marks on the cake front.
Takeaway brownie for sharing with Mrs Crusader back at Crusader Towers
It was a bit hard to rate the Ploughshare without knowing what things would have been like in more normal conditions but I certainly liked the set up and with such good cake I would recommend a visit.

As we left we were had genuine thanks from the staff for making the effort to visit and I felt rather sad about the struggle such places would be having over the coming months as we all find ourselves in this impossible situation.

As my diary is now rather empty I have arranged another 3 rides for next week but obviously any cafe visits will depend on further instructions and guidance from the government.

What no gears. (Bircham Stores and Cafe, Great Bircham)

Bircham Stores and café,
Great Bircham,
Everyday 8:00-18:00,
Highly Recommended
With all the bad news and sporting cancellations I was relieved that the government had given the go ahead for yesterday's planned cafe cycle ride but it had plenty of it's own non virus related drama.

I had invited Big George to join me in North West Norfolk as I was keen to visit Bircham Stores and Cafe as it had been on my cafe to do list for some time. I was also hoping to get in some "Egg on toast of the year" action although a pre ride internet search had raised some doubt as to if it would be available.

The day started well as I added a new free car park to my list of "the top 10 free car parks to start a bike ride from". This was a very large car park at the Creake Abbey cafe and shops although I suspect you are meant to buy something there rather than just use the car park. As it has an excellent farm shop and I have previously highly recommended the cafe then this is no hardship (although we didn't actually go in today).
Part of the huge overflow car park field at Creake Abbey
I liked the car park and it rated well so shot straight into the top ten list although as it is only the 6th one I've visited it wasn't that much of an achievement.

With the bikes unloaded we were on our way, or were we? I hadn't gone more than a few metres when I realised my di2 electronic gears weren't changing. Further investigation highlighted that I had a flat battery (for reasons too boring to explain, although it wasn't my fault!) leaving me with two choices. Either go straight home without a ride (NEVER!) or do the ride in the gear it was currently stuck in. Fortunately it was in a good gear for a single speed ride so this is what I attempted.

You may remember that on a previous ride, Big George had had a mechanical on his bike meaning he was stuck in one gear. To show solidarity that day, I had put my bike in the same gear and we did the ride with the same set up.

Remembering this Big George said he would join me in the same gear for the duration of the ride. However as we started up the first hill Big George pushed ahead and soon eased up the hill as I grinded up in my single gear. This was repeated on the next couple of hills until I realised his plan. He was trying to get far enough ahead so I didn't notice he was changing into an easier gear for most of each climb.
One of the many up and downs I had to contend with in a single gear
I challenged him and he soon admitted this was the case and that he just wasn't man enough to be able to resist the easier gears available to him (my words not his). As the ride continued he gave up even trying to pretend he was staying in a single gear and our cycling bond was broken, possibly forever, as this won't be forgotten next time his bike breaks on a ride (and it often does).

Our target stop came after 30 of our 40 mile loop so we were ready for refreshments when we arrived at Bircham Stores and Cafe in the village of Great Bircham.
Outside the stores entrance, the cafe entrance is a little further on but not as impressive
We were directed to the cafe part of the establishment where we were able to put our bikes into the outdoor seating courtyard area.

As Big George faffed with his bike I went inside where the friendly proprietor proudly spent some time going through the posh North Norfolk style menu and today's specials. I pretended to be interested but there was only one thing on my mind (and not on the menu). Fortunately I managed to hold my nerve and once he had finished his spiel I asked for egg on toast. I was clearly a disappointment but he was happy to oblige and confirmed they would be poached on brown. I also went for some ginger cake from a fine cake selection meaning a full cafe rating could be completed
The slices and tray bake part of the excellent cake selection
As always Big George refused any cake and stuck to the official menu options opting for scrambled egg and posh bacon accompanied by an Americano.

Big George though his coffee was excellent and gave a high guest hot drink score. My hot chocolate was a bit thin but was still good.
Today's hot drinks
The egg on toast probably had the nicest tasting eggs on my search to date but they could have done with a few seconds longer poaching for perfection. It was still an excellent EoT and went into my current top 5 so could be battling it out for the title in finals week come December.
The best tasting eggs to date in my search for EoT of the year
My ginger cake was very nice too with some proper pieces of stem ginger adding to the experience. However when it arrived it had only been gone and served on its serviette, (NOOOOOOO!), rendering it useless for crumb wiping activity. Records show that this is the first time I have had cake on serviette this year so my campaign is still going well. Despite this the Bircham Stores and Cafe was a really splendid stop with good drinks and great food so I would highly recommend a visit.
Ginger cake served on its serviette!!!!!!!!
It was only a short 10 mile and uneventful ride back to Creake Abbey although I felt the national speed limit sign on one stretch of road we came across was a little unnecessary.
Not sure anyone could get up to the national speed limit on this stretch of track
Hopefully the government will continue to allow cake crusader rides to happen as it looks like there will be little else to do in the coming weeks.

SuperHorse. (The Good, The Bad and the Hungry, Stradbrooke)

The good, the bad and the hungry,
Stradbroke,
Everyday 9:00-16:00,
Highly Recommended
With all the recent storms it has been difficult to get out on a cafe cycle ride. But with winds of only 45 mph predicted today it seemed like it was time to get out on the bike and hunt down a new cafe.

It is a well known cycling trick to make sure the first part of your route is into the wind so you have the wind behind helping you when you are tired. This was the approach I had planned for today. I informed Big George, today's cycling guest, and he then told me that earlier this week he had come up with a better idea. He had caught the train to Ely in order to have the wind behind all the way back. I said that it was not a very original cycling scam as we had done the same thing for just that reason a few months ago (see Rabbit news). He knew that but had added in a twist that led to today's cycling guest cycling top tip in order to enhance his reputation as a tight and lazy Scotsman.

Cycling guest cycling top tip no 72. To save money and make the most of windy weather then buy an open return ticket (as it costs the same as a single) to a station you would like to cycle back from, making sure that the wind will be from behind. You can then enjoy the train journey before a wind assisted cycle home. Next wait for a day when the wind is in the opposite direction and repeat the process in reverse using the other half of the ticket (as long as its within the next 30 days).

We started today's ride by using one of my current "top ten best car parks to start a bike ride from". This one was at Tyrrells Wood near Pulham Market. From here it was a very windy 20 odd miles to Stradbroke before we headed North and were wind assisted until we arrived at the good, the bad and the hungry cafe at the local equine centre. As we arrived I spotted a mild mannered looking horse in the stable paddock which we had to pass on the way to the cafe.
Outside the good, the bad and the hungry cafe
The cafe had a nice looking outdoor seating area overlooking the fields and paddocks but it was far too cold and windy to make use of today so we opted to go inside.
The outdoor seating area overlooking the equine centre
At the counter there was one of the finest cake selections I have seen for sometime. I spent quite a while picking my cake meaning I awarded a very high effective cake selection (ECS) mark. I went for chocolate mud cake and also bought some Percy Pig rocky road to take home for Mrs Crusaders afternoon snack. As always Big George refused to have cake.
An outstanding cake selection
I had also chosen to come here to test out their egg on toast in my continuing search for EoT of the year. It was a very good offering with Big George claiming it was the best he had had for some time. It looks like it's a contender for EoT of the month for February and is also currently a potential finalist for the end of year EoT off.
Very good Egg on Toast
Big George was also very enthusiastic about his americano coffee although I thought my hot chocolate was ok but not exceptional. The chocolate cake was very good indeed so got a high cake taste score.
Todays cake and hot drinks
Despite the pun, we thought the good, the bad and the hungry was a great stop and I would highly recommend a visit. I will definately be back to try some more of the cake selection.

On leaving there was no sign of the mild mannered horse but in his place there was now SuperHorse resplendent in his superhero garb about to fly off and save the world, probably.
SuperHorse about to save the world
Now with wind behind the only delay was a small section across a field before we made it safely back to the car park with another successful mission complete. As we drove off Big George enquired if I fancied a ride to Ely later this month.
Just the one field detour on this ride

Egg on Toast update

Egg on Toast of the Year clarification
I seemed to have stirred up a hornet's nest of controversy by breaking with tradition and making Egg on Toast (EoT) my thing of the year. I have been at the centre of a social media storm with literally ones of questions flooding my Twitter and Facebook accounts.

So to clarify things here are the EOT rules I will be following:
1. To qualify a cafe must be, or have been, visited by me by bike
2. Eggs can be poached, fried or scrambled. If more than one type is available, then that is my order of preference.
3. Each EoT will be marked out of 50
i.         Quality of toast. Economy sliced bread popped in the toaster won't score as highly as homemade bread or sourdough etc that has been properly grilled. Out of 10
ii.        Quality of Egg. Covering both taste of eggs and how well cooked. No slime or water in the white with a slightly runny yolk will score best. Out of 10
iii.       Presentation. What it looks like on the plate. Out of 10.
iv.       Overall enjoyment. How much I enjoyed the whole EoT experience and how the individual elements of the dish came together. Out of 20

4. If other cycling guests have also opted to have EoT then I will invite their input although my decision is final.
5. During December a finals week will take place where myself and team of EoT expert cycling guests will go on a series of rides to revisit the top 5 EoTs to crown the overall winner.

Every month I will announce the egg on toast of the month winner as well as publish the top 5 egg on toasts currently heading for finals week in December.

I had 6 EoT in January with January's Egg on toast of the month winner being the cafe at Eaton Park in Norwich.
The Eaton park cafes award winning Egg on Toast
The current top 5 EoTs can be found at
1. Eaton Park Cafe, Norwich
2. Nourish, Norwich
3. St Georges Distillery, Larling
4. Tabnabs, Mattishall
5. Ravenous Cafe, Raveningham

Blown away. (Nourish, Norwich)

Nourish,
Norwich,
Monday-Saturday 8:00-16:00,
Highly Recommended
Today's forecast was for an increasingly windy day. I knew that my cycling guest, Mrs Crusader, won't come on a cycle if there was a danger of her being blown off. I therefore made sure we would be going on a morning only ride meaning I would have to make it a fairly short one.

I had been told good things about a new cafe in Norwich, Nourish, so thought a quick 25 mile loop ending there would be just the ticket.

It was a nice little loop out to Barford and incident free although you could feel the wind picking up the further we went so I was pleased to make it to the cafe before the real gusts arrived and I got my head blown off by two different sources.

The cafe was at the site of the old Red Roaster cafe and although small inside has a large outdoor seating area available for less cold and windy days.
Outside Nourish in Norwich
It has a healthy living theme so lots of meat and dairy free options from locally sourced producers although there were still animal based offerings available too. It made for a very interesting (in a good way) cake selection from which I choose the tiffin while Mrs Crusader had the vegan millionaire shortcake to go with her Americano.
Today's eclectic cake selection
Hopefully by now you know that this year I'm in search of Egg on Toast of the year so although not on the menu I was pleased that owner Emma was more than happy to sort me out with two fried eggs on ciabatta. The eggs were excellently fried being running but with no slime for a very agreeable offering.
Today's Egg on Toast of the Year contender
Our drinks soon arrived and again scored well. My hot chocolate had a good chocolaty taste although could have been a touch stronger for top marks. Mrs Crusader thought it was excellent coffee.
Our drink choices
The cakes were very good and although the millionaires shortbread was a lot sloppier than one made from animal products it was still very tasty. My tiffin was some of the best I've had (and I've had a lot as it's my go to traybake) especially as I suspect it had a few extra ingredients not found in a more traditional recipe.
Vegan millionaire Shortbread and tiffin
The Nourish cafe was full of energy from both the healthy food vibe and Emma's enthusiasm so I really enjoyed it. The food and drinks are excellent so I highly recommend a visit.

Just as we left my phone beeped to tell me my delivery of gear cable had arrived which meant the day had got even better as I could spend it back at Crusader Towers in my secret underground bicycle workshop with a cup of tea fixing a couple of bikes ready to continue my egg on toast search tomorrow.
